How to Get There

Best accessed by road from Paro and Punakha towns. Most trailheads are reached by short drives from valley accommodations.

Permit Information

International visitors must travel with a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or guide. No separate trekking permits for day hikes.

Western Bhutan's most accessible hiking circuit centers on Paro and Punakha, where day hikes combine sacred architecture, valley views, and manageable logistics. The standout route is the climb to Paro Taktsang, but the Punakha side adds shorter scenic walks such as the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten hike. Together they form a compact introduction to Bhutanese hiking: culturally dense, visually dramatic, and feasible within a standard week-long itinerary. The Druk Path Trek between Paro and Thimphu offers a multi-day extension for those wanting to go higher.
