The Trans Bhutan Trail is Bhutan's most important long-distance walking route — a restored historic pathway used for centuries by pilgrims, messengers, traders, and officials before road travel displaced it in the 20th century. Reopened in 2022, the trail crosses the full width of the country from Haa to Trashigang. It links remote communities, heritage sites, and a wide range of landscapes from subtropical valleys to high passes above 4,000 meters. Most travelers walk popular sections (Punakha–Bumthang is a common choice) rather than the full 403km route.
