Rinpung Dzong — 'Fortress on a Heap of Jewels' — dominates the Paro Valley from its position above the river. Built in 1646 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it serves as the administrative and monastic center for Paro district. The dzong is one of the finest examples of Bhutanese fortress architecture, with massive whitewashed walls, a traditional wooden cantilever bridge (reconstructed), and interior courtyards decorated with elaborate Buddhist murals. The annual Paro Tshechu festival takes place in the dzong's courtyard, drawing large crowds for several days of masked dance performances.
