First-Time Bhutan Itinerary
A five-day starter itinerary linking Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha — Bhutan's essential western triangle.

Overview
Bhutan works best as a slow, compact trip: a few valleys, a handful of major monasteries and dzongs, and one or two walks that let the landscape breathe. This starter itinerary covers the western triangle — Paro, Thimphu, Punakha — which most first-time visitors prioritize.
Suggested Route
Days 1–2: Paro
Arrive at Paro International Airport, one of the world's most dramatic landings. Spend the first day acclimatizing with a visit to Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum. On day two, hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) — the signature experience of any Bhutan trip. Allow four to five hours round trip.
Day 3: Thimphu
Drive to Thimphu (1.5 hours). Visit Tashichho Dzong, the Memorial Chorten, Buddha Dordenma, and the weekend market if timing allows. The capital is small enough to cover in a day.
Days 4–5: Punakha and Return
Cross Dochula Pass (stop for the 108 chortens and mountain views) to Punakha. Visit Punakha Dzong, walk the long suspension bridge, and hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. Return to Paro via Thimphu on day five for departure.
Tips
- All international visitors must book through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or arrange a guide.
- The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of USD 100 per night applies to most international visitors.
- Keep transfers short and build in buffer for road conditions.
- Spring (March–May) brings rhododendron blooms and Paro Tshechu; autumn (September–November) offers clear skies and festival season.
